Until we can read the minds of animals, or talk to them in some way, we cannot be aware of their thoughts and feelings.  Maybe if we could we (humankind that is) would not be so cruel or so destructive, and we might discover that some other species is in fact better than humans.  Consider, for instance, the bee, who will sacrifice itself to protect the hive, or the elephant, who mourns the death of another, and strokes the bleached bones so gently with its trunk.
